Winter Awakening

Words and music by Robbie Smith

The wind awakens winter in me
And it leaves my spirit bleak & barren
Yearning for fond moments to be
And the spring in all its fragrant finery

The skies are dressed in dull shades of gray
And the farmland fields lie sleeping fallow
A lone bird call takes me away
To future promise far away from today

Through the chill – still will we sing
Sweet transitions winter to spring
Spur the seasons on ‘til they change
The bleakness the blackness
The bitter winter rains… winter rains

The wind bestirs the last of the leaves
Decaying dancing ghosts of summer
The gales return and sweep thru the trees
Seeking brittleness and frailty

The snows begin to blanket the dawn
The twigs and branches creak and quiver
While I retreat where dreamers belong
To find pleasure in a hearth-fire song

Through the chill – still will we sing
Sweet transitions winter to spring
Spur the seasons on ‘til they change
Believe ‘til belief turns the cold snows to warm rains…
Warm rains

The flames return new hope to my heart
Though the grip of frost grows tighter
But brighter thoughts from each thrown spark
Join the kindle-glow dispelling the dark

One Storm From Home

Words and music by Robbie Smith

Ice on the railing and snow in my eyes
Too rough for sailing and too late to hide
Lower the canvas, we’ll ride out the storm
One storm away from our families and home

This old girl is creaking, she’s nearing her time
The side planks are leaking, but she’ll come through just fine
Our provisions are low and there’s no keeping warm
But remember good lads we’re just one storm from home

One storm away from our home
Lashed by the waves, stung by the spray
With the wind cutting clean to the bone
But soon we’ll be safe
We’re one storm away from our home

Reciting old letters from loved ones and friends
Stained by the weather or lost to the wind
My mem’ry is clear, but the night’s getting black
There’s no moving forward, there’s no turning back

A glimpse of a lighthouse that blinks in the west
A beacon that guides us to a well deserved rest
The wind’s getting greedy and gathering foam
But just keep your heads boys, we’re one storm from home…

One storm away from our home – from our home
Lashed by the waves, stung by the spray
With the wind cutting clean to the bone
But soon we’ll be safe
We’re one storm away from our home
We’re one storm away from our home
Just one storm away

A storm ridden voyage to the ends of the earth
Stretching our courage and testing our worth
Well, we’ve known worse than this one, we’re holding our own
And this is the last one, we’re one storm from home

One storm away from our home – from our home
Lashed by the waves, stung by the spray
With the wind cutting clean to the bone
But soon we’ll be safe
We’re one storm away from our home
From our home
One storm away, one storm away…from our home

(Well, we’re one storm)
(well, we’re one storm from home)
(Well, we’re one storm) With the wind cutting clean to the bone
(Well, we’re one storm) One storm, one storm
(Well, we’re one storm) With the wind cutting clean to the bone
(Well, we’re one storm) One storm, one storm
Repeat and fade

Christmas On The Shrimp Boats

Music: Robbie Smith
Words: Robbie Smith & Kath Glauser

It’s Christmas on the shrimp boats, not as bad as you might think
Papa Noel the Captain soon be buyin’ us each a drink
And the crew they’re just like family, they only fight three times a day
So say, just sail away, but sing me a carol today

It’s Christmas on the shrimp boats – ya know bills don’t pay themselves
We’ve all been jugglin’ double shifts – as busy as Santa’s elves
There’s palm fronds waving from the shoreline – fair tradewinds on the bay
So say, just sail away, but sing me a carol today

You can play it on accordion or through a rusty harp
Don’t mind if you’re singin’ flat or if you’re singin’ sharp

It’s Christmas on the shrimp boats – we’re celebrating like we should
The cook he tells the same old jokes, but his jambalaya’s good
Each time someone rings that ship’s bell, I think of reindeer and a sleigh
So say, just sail away, but sing me a carol today

We’re heading for a fais do do, we’re gonna pass a good time there
Yes it won’t be long til we’ve anchored be the weather foul or fair
We’ll go from sand bars to tiki bars – til we’ve spent all of our pay
So say, just sail away, but sing me a carol today

“How’s ya mama an’ them?” And all your friends?
Ya know I bought them all some Christmas cards
I haven’t had a chance to send… oh…

It’s Christmas on the shrimp boats – I’m sure we all look a fright
But hey I’ve got my dice out and I feel like they’re rollin’ right
So take the oar now I see the shore now all lit up with Christmas lights
Alright – such a cheery sight – so sing me a carol tonight

(Instrumental Verse)

You can play it on accordion or through a rusty harp
Don’t mind if you’re singin’ flat or if you’re singin’ sharp…

We’ll finish up the last round, with a dark and stormy silent night
Alright, my head’s feelin light, so sing me a carol tonight
Sing me a carol (sing me a carol) tonight (all is calm all is bright)
Sing me a carol (sing me a carol) holy night (sing me a carol)
Sing me a carol tonight (all is calm all is bright)
Sing me a carol, Silent Night

Sing the Winter Away

Words and music by Robbie Smith

Oh, the winter frost is settling in
And I know the snows will soon begin
Into the air the leaves are swirled
The world goes ‘round – ‘round goes the world

And the sun’s so slow to brighten the dawn
The autumn harvest time has long since gone
And in the field a scarecrow stands
No crops to guard – just lonely lands

But we’ve got mem’ries so kind and clear
Gathered in warmer times to bring good cheer
To fill our hearts and souls with mirthful song
To keep us safe and glad all winter long

And we’ll sing the winter away, sing the winter away
Though it may be cold and gray outside it’s warm within
So let’s sing the winter away, sing the winter away
In our hearts we’ll dance and play and soon it’ll be spring

Lah lah lah lah lah…Lah lah lah lah lah
Lah lah lah lah lah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Lah lah lah lah lah…Lah lah lah lah lah
Lah lah lah lah lah

Aye, a wint’ry pall has covered the hill
The wind grows strong and then grows stronger still
And the shutters quake with every gust
The storms must come as come they must…

But we’ve got mem’ries so kind and clear
Gathered in warmer times to bring good cheer
To fill our hearts and souls with mirthful song
To keep us safe and glad all winter long

And we’ll sing the winter away, sing the winter away
The glow of summer yet will stay if to the light we cling
So let’s sing the winter away, sing the winter away
In our hearts we’ll dance and play and soon it’ll be spring

And we’ll sing the winter away, sing the winter away
Though it may be cold and gray outside it’s warm within
So let’s sing the winter away, sing the winter away
In our hearts we’ll dance and play and soon it’ll be spring
Yes, in our hearts we’ll dance and play and soon
And soon – it’ll be spring

Lah lah lah lah lah… Lah lah lah lah lah
Lah lah lah lah lah…..lah lah lah
